FOX Television asks: “Autism Correlation Coverup? Vaccine claims rarely compensated by government,” during the Fox News’ Fox & Friends Saturday. The news segment begins with the story the family of Hannah Poling. Hannah is a young child who, after receiving vaccines against nine diseases in one doctor’s visit, at the age of 18 months, reportedly developed autism. The family of Hannah Poling was later awarded $1.5 million, in September 2010.

According to www.Lawyersandsettlements.com, Hannah was vaccinated in July 2000, against measles, mumps, rubella, polio, varicella, diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus, and Haemophilus influenzae. Her health reportedly declined rapidly following the vaccines, she stopped eating, developed high fevers, didn’t respond when spoken to, started having screaming fits, and began to show signs of autism. In 2002 her family filed an autism claim in federal vaccine court.

This settlement is the first award of its kind. And, according to www.Lawyersandsettlements.com, there are approximately 4,800 further autism cases awaiting disposition in federal vaccine court.

Dana Emmitt-Hall, a mother of a child with autism, appears on the FOX television segment. Dana has one of the autism cases in the waiting. The case was filed for her young son and, on the segment, she speaks about how she received a letter from the Federal Vaccine Court that requested she provide a “theory of why we believe the vaccines cause the autism.” The letter continues on to ask that they provide a “medical expert’s opinion” to the Federal Vaccine Court.

“We have our theories” said Dana. However, she hasn’t been able to find “medical experts willing to risk losing their medical license in the United States.”

Mary Holland, a professor at New York University’s Law School, also appeared on the segment. The professor didn’t have any hope to offer Dana or the other 4,800 families with cases waiting. In fact, the professor says that this is letter from the Federal Vaccine Court is “probably the end of the line” but the parents could preserve their cases for a later date if they step out of the cases in a particular way.

Holland is among the founders of the Elizabeth Birt Center for Autism Law and Advocacy (EBCALA).  Holland told, ICare4Autism, that the non-profit organization “seeks to educate lawyers and the public about the legal needs of the autism community.”

A supreme court case on this matter will be held in October.

Eric Hollander, M.D., is an internationally recognized psychiatrist and former Esther and Joseph Klingenstein Professor and Chair of Psychiatry at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine and Director of the Seaver and Greater New York Autism Center of Excellence. He is the Chairman of The International Center for Autism Research and Education’s Advisory Board. He is also the Chair of Psychiatry at Montefiore Medical Center.

Eli Hatchwell, M.D., PhD

Dr. Eli Hatchwell records a message for online conference viewers.

Dr. Eli Hatchwell is a Medical Geneticist and Molecular Genetics scientist who studies a variety of childhood disorders, including Autism Spectrum Disorders, Congenital Heart Disease and a number of lesser known but important conditions. Dr. Hatchwell was among the first to discover the phenomenon of copy number variation in normal human beings, and specializes in the use of copy number variation for his study of human genetic disorders. He is a member of The International Center for Autism Research and Education’s Advisory Board.

Ken Aitken M.A., MPhil, PhD – Scotland

Dr. Aitken is a clinical neuropsychologist and researcher with a particular interest in neurodevelopmental disorders, particularly in those conditions that result in differences in social interaction and development such as the Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs) and the Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorders. Presentation Title: Genetics: Inverted Dup 15/idic(15).

Abstract: Chromosome region 15q11q13, known for its instability, is highly susceptible to clinically relevant genomic rearrangements, such as supernumerary marker chromosomes formed by the inverted duplication of proximal chromosome 15. Inv dup(15) results in tetrasomy 15p and partial tetrasomy 15q. Those containing the Prader-Willi/Angelman syndrome critical region (PWS/ASCR), are responsible for the inv dup(15) or idic(15) syndrome. The syndrome displays distinctive clinical findings represented by early central hypotonia, developmental delay and intellectual disability, epilepsy, and autistic behaviour. Incidence at birth is estimated to be 1 in 30,000 with a sex ratio of almost 1. Developmental delay and intellectual disability affect all individuals and are usually moderate to profound. A child immigrant, from Ethiopia, arrives to Israel

What if someone told you that there is something that can immobilize your child from doing such basic things as socializing, eating and even learning to go the restroom on their own? What if then they told you that it was a disorder that affects one in 91 children, one in 58 boys? You ask how to prevent it, they tell you that it cannot be prevented and it cannot be cured. In fact, it is so baffling that 1,000’s of researchers still have no idea what causes it. Welcome to autism.

Numbers for Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), most commonly known as autism, have skyrocketed. These numbers are higher than ever, up 59% in just the past few years. Since autism is a disorder that falls on a spectrum that means that all cases are different. Common characteristics include various hypersensitivities to light, sound, touch, smell and many persons with autism are non-verbal.

Many people ask, if this number is lower or higher in the Jewish community. It is neither. However, there are areas that are more concentrated with people on the Autistic Spectrum. In the United States, this occurs in parts of California. This occurrence leads many to feel that autism is environmental. Others believe that autism comes from genetics and some see autism as a result of mercury-based chemicals, such as Thimerosal (banned in America).

There is still much to be learned about all of these possible causes. In Israel, there is also a desperate need for advancements in access to autism diagnosis. Around the world, many locations are without the proper professionals to diagnosis autism. In third world countries, access to diagnosis is non-existent.

Autism professionals having been vying to work together but according to many, that option has only been a dream, until now. The dream, a major conference, has manifested through the persistent hard work and dedication of the International Center for Autism Research, Inc. (ICare4Autism). And, it will come to life on July 5-6 at the 2010 International Autism Conference to be held in Jerusalem’s Ramada- Renaissance. The non-profit, based out of New York, also has an office in the Holy City.

At the conference, over 30 researchers, from around the globe, will showcase their original research. Advancements in autism are to be debuted. Researchers, such as experts Eric Hollander, M.D. and Eli Hatchwell, M.D. will be speaking on their fields of expertise.

As the number of children diagnosed with autism skyrockets, people continue to debate the cause of the spectrum disorder altogether. Some people learn towards the cause being found in genetics, some lean towards the environment, and many blame various vaccines given to children within the first years of their lives, such as the Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR) vaccine. A year ago, a mercury-based component that mimicked the USA banned drug, Thiomersal, ignited controversy, as it was an active ingredient in the H1N1 vaccine. Now, a year later, in autism, we are all left at a new crossroad. What causes this spectrum disorder that one in 91 children are affected by?

According to industry professionals, one setback in finding the cause of autism comes from repeated and simultaneous studies and a need for a unified system of research. Industry professionals have been vying for the chance to connect in a more efficient way. Now, numbers have jumped up 59% in only the last few years. Parents of today, live with the greatest fear, as they are unable to protect their child from something that science cannot identify the reason behind, let alone a cure.

In Israel, on July 5-6, Jerusalem’s Ramada- Renaissance Hotel will welcome the connective platform for 30 autism experts, at the 2010 International Autism Conference. At the event, the hot-button topic of Neuropsychopharmacology, how drugs can relate to the mind, will be fully covered by Dr. Eric Hollander. Dr. Eli Hatchwell, Director the Genomics Core Facility at Stony Brook University (NY-USA) will speak on “Modern Approaches to the Study of the Genetics of Autism.” This topic will dive into a variation of topics but also the core issue of the potential of genetics being linked to autism.

During the ICare4Autism 2010: Cocktail Gala, an award ceremony hosted by Miss USA, Kristen Dalton, and co-hosted by ICare4Autism Chief of Staff Ruth Amber Gristak, was held to acknowledge two organizations and one individual who have performed exquisite work for the autistic community in the Tampa Bay Area.  Each award winner received a special plaque that listed their name and accomplishment.

The event was held at the Florida Aquarium in Tampa, Florida from 6pm-10pm on the evening of Thursday April 15^th, 2010. There was also a luxury auction  held that evening which feature one-of-a-kind items such as sports memorabilia and event the chance to attend the Grammy’s. One auction winner, Brandon Lloyd took home a helmet signed by an entire professional football team!

Recipients of this year’s  Autism Impact Award’s are:

Behavioral Consulting of Tampa Bay (BCOTB).  BCOTB has offices in Tampa and Wesley Chapel, Florida. This organization was founded by Kelley Prince.   BCOTB’s teaching methods are heavily based on Applied Behavior Analysis and also focus on individualized instruction.

BCOTB provides 1 on 1 instruction to children with a diagnosis of autism or a related disorder.  Instruction areas include: language/communication, self-help skills, academic skills, appropriate play skills, compliance training, and classroom readiness skills.  Each child receives an initial evaluation and an individualized set of goals to be targeted.  Learn more at http://www.bcotb.com.

Reno Williams is a 12-year-old who has overcome being diagnosed with a multitude of disabilities.  Taught to acknowledge and be proud of his abilities, Reno could not avoid noticing that he was different from his peers. Reno began researching autism and became overwhelmed by the confusing information on the internet.

In response, Reno wrote a brochure guiding others who just were as puzzled as he was about the debilitating disability.  Once Reno developed his project, he contacted the Center for Autism and Related Disabilities (CARD) and connected with Leigh Anna Nowak.  Their meeting resulted in creating powerpoint presentations for Reno and exploring Reno’s public speaking abilities.  

Reno has spoken to thousands of children, educators and community members on various autism topics and published his own book last year entitled, Reno’s World: Presenting Autism and Related Disabilities.

Sydney’s School for Autism.  Kathy Swenson founded Sydney’s School for Autism after being unsatisfied with the education her autistic daughter was receiving at a “mainstream school.”

Sydney’s School for Autism uses Applied Behavior Analysis in addition to social interaction with other preschool children at Great Beginnings (which was integrated with Sydney’s School to form one establishment).  Sydney’s School is in the process of partnering with major area hospital, making them the first center offering this kind of service east of the Mississippi River.  Learn more at http://www.sydneysschoolhouse.com/.

The International Center for Autism Research and Education (ICare4Autism) is putting the finishing touches on their gala, to be held in Tampa, at the Florida Aquarium. The ICare4Autism 2010: Cocktail Gala will be held from 6pm-10pm on the evening of Thursday, April 15^th and is hosted by Miss USA Kristen Dalton. Tampa Bay’s 93.3 FLZ will be broadcasting from the event. 100s of door prizes will be given out to attendees.

The gala is expected to attract approximately 1,000s of attendees to the Florida Aquarium for an altruistic evening of memories. Most importantly, the event will raise awareness and funds for Autism Research and Education for the neurological disorder that affects 1 in 91 children, 1 in 58 boys. These numbers are up 59% since 2002.

MISS USA, Kristen Dalton, smiles with Michael Becker, a child with autism from New York

The International Center for Autism Research and Education (ICare4Autism) is proud to announce that MISS USA, Kristen Dalton will be hosting the ICare4Autism 2010: Cocktail Gala. This major event will be held at the Florida Aquarium on April 15th, 2010 in Tampa, Florida.

Today, the Wilmington, North Carolina native met with ICare4Autism Chief of Staff, Ruth Amber Gristak and a very special child with autism, Michael Becker. The child was accompanied by his mother, grandmother and aunt, at ICare4Autism‘s New York offices.

Micheal’s grandmother, Carol Bueti, gave a detailed account of all the up’s, downs and everyday struggles that the family, which work as a team, experience while raising the sweet young child with autism.

Overall, the meeting was very in-depth. All attendees shared a very inspirational experience as Bueti explained how the hardest part to cope with is seeing her grandson stem off from other children and lack the enjoyment capacity for social experiences. This includes the park, birthday parties, etc.

At today’s meeting, Miss USA, Kristen Dalton, spoke about how she took an entire course on Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy, which Michael receives at his highly acclaimed school, Shema Kolainu- Hear Our Voices- School and Center for Children with Autism, in Brooklyn, New York.
