New Ground Breaking Documentary: Autism in America

autism in america film

As most us know, autism is one of the most fastest growing serious developmental disabilities in the United States. Current statistics now say about 1 in 88 children are diagnosed and 54 of them are boys; making the diagnosis 5 times more likely for males. However, most Americans still have little to absolutely no idea what autism actually means.

Director and writer Zac Adams has created an emotionally eye opening film that attempts to answer just that question. Autism can be defined in many ways but the common characteristics are the challenges in social and communication areas. He complies personal stories from families and professionals who are effected by autism on a daily basis.

Chandra Wilson is the powerful voice behind the narration throughout the entire film. She may be better known as Dr. Miranda Bailey in the very popular ABC television show Grey’s Anatomy. Wilson carries the audience as they discover the faces and the people behind the autism.

Financial hardship is a heavy burden discussed in the documentary. According to Juli Liske, Executive Director of Brown Center for Autism, states that the cost of care from birth to end of life is about 3.5 million. One mother says she had spent $60,000 on healthcare for her son between the ages of 2 – 6 years old.

The team behind the movie seeks to educate, raise awareness, point out misconceptions, and show the positive side of autism while showing inspiring resolutions. This film helps viewers feel compassion toward children and adults on the spectrum.

Some interviewees have ASD themselves. One woman says she loves the fact that she has autism. There are things she can see that others don’t, and she can heal things that others can’t. Amanda Peltz, the Executive Director of Autism Tennessee, says there’s an openness and honesty we can all learn from them. What you see is what you get, and there is beauty in that.
