The New York Times recently published an article by Jane Brody titled “Trying Anything and Everything for Autism.” It chronicles one family’s trials and tribulations for finding effective treatment for their son with autism, including speech therapy, a dairy-free diet and gluten-free diet, supplements, and behavioral intervention. The article concludes, “With the increase in awareness of autism and improvements in diagnosis, more children today can get an early start on effective therapy rather than wasting valuable time, effort and money on remedies that lack a scientific basis and proof of effectiveness.”
However, not everyone agrees. As Mary Beth Walsh of New Jersey wrote in a letter to the editor, “did not address the ethics of subjecting a child with autism to unproven ‘biomedical” interventions.’”
