Presentation Title
Autism Regression – Diagnosis and Outcome
Children with autism often show regression in development. The regression is reported in 20-40% of children who receive the diagnosis of autism. This diagnosis usually occurs in the second year of life with regression in language, social, and play abilities. No gross motor regression is reported and the etiology is unknown.
The lecture will focus on the various manifestations of the autistic regression and the possible etiologies and theories regarding the underlying mechanism. This includes the latest debate of the possible connection between mitochondrial disorder, vaccinations, and autism regression. Additionally, the discussion will incorporate the phenomena’s significance during the evaluation of a child with suspected autism and subsequent prognosis.
